Title: Akira's one song per month!
Post by: Akira on November 10, 2017, 08:06:55 PM
I'm trying to be more disciplined in writing music, considering it is a life goal to write the soundtrack for a game someday. So, I thought I'd try to hold myself to writing one song per month, and share it publicly so others can hold me accountable as well :)

Here goes ~

Hello Alzar!
Yeah! Fresh music from fresh composers! Let's hear! I will comment your "Song of the moon", okay? :)

----

In this melody you are talking (yes, talking) about a moon: A serene moon.
But hey, watch this: The moon, along with the stars are not alone! You definitively are won't talking just about that moon alone itself. That moon, as I said in your intro thread about RPG Maker, is just an instrument haha.

You're talking about a scenario that the moon is present! And has a very important role: Being there and make a silent night the most beautiful night ever, as all others, watching maybe the most beautiful thing in the earth. Look at that! Now you're asking ┬┐What sort of thing? Well, you need to imagine it, beacuse the music has a lot of imagination to give to the listener to think ever most nice things. There so many beautiful things that can occur into a beautiful night sky!

But who cares about that? Almost all nights have a shiny moon. And lots of people live with her all nights, as his/her only silent friend. Life continues, as the music goes and ends (or loops?).

-----
Is a calm and powerful melody, with a big soul inside. You truly made a melody with a soul, that tells you a history, rather than a non-sense hi-fi instrument comparsa that sounds well to ear. I can imagine it in a commercial game without doubts.

Keep up the good work, congrats!
I will be waiting the November melody with joy!
Bye!

P.S: You made me feel motivated to publish some of my work here too... Maybe is not as wonderful like shigi ones or yours, but... Let's give a try haha.

*Song of the Moon*

I am reminded powerfully of the song of the spirits from Arc the Lad, Twilight of the Spirits, as well as one or two of the pieces from Legend of Legaia.

I feel like I'm in the middle of a tribal ceremony under the moon and stars. People drumming, dancing, and shaking cups of beans while the ancestors speak through our songs.

If there's any visual art or storyline that accompanies this piece, I'd love to see some of it.

*Stupid Song*

There is some poignance in this piece. Determination in the face of loss and strife. The instruments lend themselves to a more modern-feeling setting - or perhaps post-apocalyptic.

I do *not* find it stupid.

*Untitled II*

A little melancholy, a little bittersweet - two lovers dancing together, knowing their time is short and striving to relish what moments they have with each other. Pixies flit in the background as they waltz in the winds - their song suddenly cut short as the moment ends and their journey must continue.

*Silly pop song*

A light-hearted quest. Sent by the dragon queen to recover a trinket from her youth. All is well in the world, perhaps only a whisper of evil upon the grass. Adventure.

I should listen to more XD

Oh wow, thanks you guys! I was not expecting such detailed and evocative reviews :D This is very inspiring!

One of my major problems when I write music is I'll think of something, and think I wrote it, but it'll turn out to be from secret of mana or chrono trigger or something :) The last riff I made and started recording turned out to be a variation on "Welcome to the Skylands" from Rakuen, haha.

Anyhoo, just wanted to let you guys know I really appreciated the comments :)

The Lion King is Hamlet. It is also NOT Hamlet.

Sufficient variation makes something original. Having your feet on another's shoulders is not shameful - there are uncounted skilled and talented creators and your work cannot be completely different from all of theirs'.

Does not make it not good.

Hi again.

... Mmmmm about the chiptune one, sounds nice, but I don't think so about the reverb you put there (just an opinion hehe). But the melody don't have any issues! It's a pack of various sensations, like childish-young atmosphere, running into the emptiness, but with something epic at the back: a history that nobody knows, but feel people respect to that person. Yeah, just like those NES adventures!

You made it with VST, or with more obscure techniques... saying... "ahem" trackers? Just asking for thinking into old-school ROM technical things :)  ;)

Yeah, I would love to see a more-pure reverb-free version of this song, but again, just tastes haha.
Congrats again!

Thanks for sharing your music with us, Alzar! Writing a new track each month is a great way to practice. I remember in college, I used to procrastinate doing my homework in favor of messing around with an old version of Cakewalk... I made so many arrangements through this procrastination lol! What software do you use to make your music?

"Song of the Moon" is pretty - it reminds me of something that I'd hear in a tavern in World of Warcraft. It's serene and mysterious, and I like when the soft percussion comes in.

I totally relate to that feeling of getting a track started, but then not having it pan out. It's kind of frustrating because it's like your brain comes up with this great idea, but then it's like, "sorry, that's all I got for now... you deal with it!" :P "Poo" (haha) feels like it's gonna lead into something big, I keep waiting for the hook or the percussion to hit! It's a good intro!

I think December 2017 is my favorite of the bunch - It's got a catchy melody, and a chord progression that feels adventurous and determined, but also a bit mysterious all at the same time. The part that comes in at around 31 seconds is a great departure from the first section with a good driving feel. Something about this track reminds me of Proto Man's stage from Mega Man 5 (one of my favorite games of all time, largely in part because of the soundtrack)

Ahhhhh this totally makes my day xD I wish I could procrastinate by writing music, I kinda do the opposite and procrastinate writing music haha @_@

A random aside, I found your channel looking for a "To Far Away Times" piano cover back in like, 2012, and I remember listening to your protoman stage cover quite a few times also because I really love that song. Unconsciously I think the section between 0:12-0:18 "borrows" from the section of protoman's castle between 0:04-0:09...I do this a lot @_@ Many of the songs I think I made up have riffs from Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger... Er but anyway, it makes my day to have my song compared to one of my favorites :)

To answer you and EN.I about what software I use, I use the one that was most intuitive and simple to me which is called Mixcraft, and I use the Toadstool and Peach VSTs for the 8-bit music I make (so it's all super fakebit stuff, I haven't looked into how to use trackers or anything). Do you still use Cakewalk? That's like OG composition software :D

Ahhh running out of February time ~~

On borrowed riffs: I like to think of it as a conversation between you and the previous composer.

It's like you're saying "Oh wow, I LOVE this. But hey, what if we do this instead? What do you think?"

And shigi, I totally feel you - so many times I get struck with just a stanza of lyrics for something or just a few bars of melody notes and don't know what the heck I'm supposed to do with 'em. I just pop 'em into my iphone voice recorder and try to keep moving on with life. I wish I had more time to sit and tinker them around... One day I'll make time ^_^

I need to go listen to December's tune now...

Hi Alzar! I also left you a response to your introduction thread (I'm just getting back into the forums after a long absence, so I missed a lot of threads over these past months).

Haha, it is! I haven't used Cakewalk in a long time, but I've used their other products for the bulk of my career. My favorite was Sonar 6 (and when I was at EA, I couldn't get that version, so I used whatever the latest one was at the time... X or X2 I think). Unfortunately, Sonar is no longer being made, and the later versions I felt lost some of what made me prefer Sonar over other industry standard software. So I still have Sonar on my PC, but I'm trying out Logic on Mac.

Ah, I'm glad you're familiar with that music! Whenever I've mentioned my love for Protoman's stage music in the past, most folks haven't heard it before. And that's cool you were looking for "To Far Away Times" - A couple years back when Mitsuda asked me to contribute to the Chrono 20th Anniversary Album, they were just gonna have me do two songs (Corridors of Time and Schala's Theme). But at the last minute, they were like, "I know this is short notice, but would it be too much trouble to ask you to do a vocal version for "To Far Away Times" also?" I was like, umm... YES I WOULD LOVE TO!!!!" Hehe :)

OOPS I forgot February was a short month and my procrastination failed me...We'll pretend this song is a February song @_@

This song is intended as the general "town" theme for my Game Jam game, if I don't decide to change direction on it. But basically it's supposed to be kinda backgroundy and pleasant sounding, and not get too annoying to hear on repeat:

That is insanely awesome :D Mitsuda is one of my heroes, it would be so amazing for him to ask to do something, I can't even imagine xD

I meant to ask you one more thing -- there's a particular sound you use that I really like, but I have no idea what to call it (because it sounds kinda like 'boop' or 'doot') -- it's the non piano sound in the intro (and throughout) of From The Ground Up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgkISsZG34I) and the boop in Welcome to the Skylands (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52LW2tucCgY)...Is there a name for that particular type of ...doot?

Oooh, I like this piece for a "town" theme! It's relaxing, and the variety in chord progression (with more upbeat parts, and then more quiet breakdowns that have fewer instruments) makes it so that you can listen to it on repeat. For some reason, I can totally imagine it being one of those themes where after playing through the game and hearing it again later, it becomes really nostalgic.

Ah, you must be talking about the Sine Wave! My most favorite synthesized sound <3

Didn't wait until last minute this month! Woo ~

This time I wanted to try something different, and ended up with something kinda simple but randomly dramatic...definitely not perfect, I'll probably revisit the theme sometime when I'm better at making things sound like they do in my head

Oh nice :D Looks like Mixcraft has a "Sine Lead" VST that sounds kind of similar, with a bazillion knobs, will have to play around :D

interesting. It kept bringing Metal Gear Solid to mind, especially in the first half. Later it started to feel a little more fantasy than war machine.

Thanks for sharing ^_^

Last month was by far my best month in writing music ever, thanks to working on my game jam game :D

Here is the soundtrack, 12 songs in all, though one is a big remix of some of my favorite game songs, and a few are remixes of each other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdJFAJujPcY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdJFAJujPcY)

New month new song!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyuDSuc-dUQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyuDSuc-dUQ)

This is supposed to be the beach theme (spoiler for Anime Dream Girl Episode 2)... I would note that this sounds a lot like other songs I've written for Anime Dream Girl so I think I will need to branch out a little more for the next song >.<

For some reason the chord changes starting at 1:06 were really hard for me and I had to redo that part like 30 times because the chords sounded off o_o

WOO I finished a song

My other songs were starting to sound really similar so this time I tried making a folk..rock..song

Then I couldn't think of any deep lyrics so I just made a song about coding and getting stuck on a bug

On each of them I tried to use some new techniques, like pitch bends and playing with delay effects, hopefully I'm improving xD

Hi Akira,

September 2018 Song:

I like how the introduction draws listeners in with its first four measures, then kicks off as it goes along. The rhythm, beats and melody altogether blend harmoniously and I'm totally feeling the passion and energy shining through from each track you put together. It does give off some Chrono Trigger vibes and I think the flow would suit something like Castlevania.

October 2018 Song:

The introduction has a vibrant, dream-like quality. The pitch blends on each of the tracks are very clear. None of them overpower, nor overlap the other. They can all be heard without one track ever eclipsing over the other. The track overall is very soothing, like the kind of track that inspires one to get lost in thought or self-reflection.

November 2018 Song:

It has a really good late-90's, early 2000's rock vibe. I like the melody and the atmosphere of the track. Plus your voice is perfect for the genre. Also, your lyrics are spot on and clever! If you'd like, you could try experimenting with the delay effects a bit on the vocal, but overall, it's a solid track.

I'm also learning some of these techniques myself, but I hope my feedback was helpful. Definitely keep up the good work and can't wait to hear more!
