Title: YouTube Videos Worth Watching
Post by: Merlandese on April 15, 2012, 05:24:35 PM
I couldn't find a thread that dealt exactly with videos you're watching.

Go ahead and post any internet video you have an interest in, or just want others to see!

(If this thread exists already somewhere, please merge it with the others. :) )

Today, I'm watching Wil Wheaton's Tabletop show on Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry channel. Good fun.

Small World: Wil Wheaton, Jenna Busch, Grant Imahara, Sean Plott. TableTop, Episode 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9QtdiRJYro#ws)

I'm totally in love with Felicia Day and I love her new Geek and Sundry channel! Tabletop is REALLY fun, the next episode will be about Settlers of Catan!

It's not really on youtube but I find Extra Credits is a fairly interesting web show.

It's about game design and each week they focus 8 or so minutes on a specific topic such as "True female characters (http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/true-female-characters)", "Tangental Learning (http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/tangential-learning)", and "The Role of the Player (http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/the-role-of-the-player)"

Yeah, that's a really good show. I wish it was on YouTube so you could link it better.

Oooh, Reives, Shigi and I got to eat with James Portnow (writer for EC) and his awesome ladyfriend at Denny's. Great people. Reives and I even got to hang out with him after his panel at PAX East. He plugged To the Moon to his fans. True story. :D

Every now and then I have to listen to this one: Laura Shigihara - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (cover) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yycoJyiNUaI#ws)

I love it sooo much.

@SuperRoo: You're right, this woman is awesome! ^^ Thank you for sharing her with us. That's the passion we rarely ever see in stars nowadays. Btw: In case you're interested in why her song is called "Crystallize", look at this: http://lindseystirlingviolin.com/lindsey-blog/new-song-crystallize/ (http://lindseystirlingviolin.com/lindsey-blog/new-song-crystallize/)

@SuperRoo: Yes, I did see the Zelda-video aka the video you linked in this thread. :P And I did watch the Skyrim one (and the LotR-one) when browsing a bit further. But my favorite one is her newest song, i.e. Crystallize, because I have a weak spot for snow and ice crystals.

@Nikrul: I'm German, so unless she flies over here I'm not going to her concert.

Um, Belgium is to the west of Germany, so you're a tiny little bit closer. ;)

I wonder why there are so few stars who can smile heartily like her (or Laura for that matter), because imo there's nothing more beautiful than someone who really loves what they're doing.

Perhaps one of the most visually pleasing sprite animations I've seen. Zero vs Omega Zero, the final battle of Megaman Zero 3. All the audio is from in-game and the Remastered Tracks of the Zero series soundtrack, which even includes clips from the the drama tracks.

It's probably best not to watch it on fullscreen on a computer. Just thought I'd mention that.

It's been awhile since anyone posted in this, but this kid tells his story about how a friend of his was joining a gang and he had to kill someone for his initiation...and they chose him. The story is really incredible to hear. It's like 15 minutes: Part 1 is 6 minutes and Part 2 is 8 minutes, but it's definitely worth the watch.

I don't think I've posted this talk by Daniel Kahneman here before, but it's one of the most insightful things I've seen, which I still come back to every few months just to keep it in mind :)

Daniel Kahneman: The riddle of experience vs. memory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgRlrBl-7Yg#ws)

It has a ton of vital info that's not just far out theories, but relevant ways we work in day-to-day life. From a fascinating study of colonoscopy () about the effect of endings to the separation of the two selves that we process things with, it's eye-opening and something absolutely fascinating to think about.

Quote
We don't choose between experiences; we choose between memories of experiences. And even when we think about the future, we don't think of our future normally as experiences; we think of our future as anticipated memories.

Even though this is just cementing something that many know in one way or another already, some of the concepts in this about the way our noggins work can be extremely important. For those who haven't seen this, it starts a tad slow for a couple of minutes, but afterwards pretty much every minute is vital:

The Surprising Science of Happiness - Dan Gilbert (http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_asks_why_are_we_happy)

For the longest time, I didn't really like posting this particular talk around, since it seems to be often misinterpreted and can lead to a dangerous way of thinking. But I think with the context of Kahneman's talk at the top of this thread page, it's a lot more beneficial than not to be aware of.

(Although, there's an error in the stats he recited there from one of the studies: the data on the newly paraplegic and lottery winners were not actually exactly matching, but with the lottery winners still somewhat happier -- none the less, the difference was still far less than what one'd intuitively expect. Anyway, the overall phenomenon's still empirically valid, of course.)

Hey y'all! I was just watching Nicktendowii's newest "Retro Game A Week" video. If you haven't seen his videos, they are a great way to relive some of those nostalgic moments with old video games or a chance to be informed about obscure ones that you may not have heard about. His latest video was on Mega Man 2 for the game boy. If you haven't checked it out, you can do so at his thread in the link below.

http://www.supershigi.com/forums/index.php?topic=1155.msg28583#new (http://www.supershigi.com/forums/index.php?topic=1155.msg28583#new)

So following my train of thought from before...I was thinking to myself, the early Mega Man games are extremely brutal. The first Mega Man is ESPECIALLY brutal because you had to get a certain amount of points on the level in addition to not dying. I know i'm not the only one who writhed with frustration at the hands of the Blue Bomber, but I stumbled across this video of teenagers who've never played Mega Man before and play it for the first time. They quickly realize that NES gaming was like the pinnacle of gaming difficulty; at least, it was normal for NES games to be excrutiatingly tough to beat.

That's really interesting to watch. I have to admit that I'm one of the few avid gamers from the NES era who never played any of the MegaMan games. But as I'm watching, many of the game mechanics that catch these teens off guard seem completely intuitive and predictable to me. I think it shows how deeply games have changed over time. I would struggle just as much with games for modern systems.

Oh... and they clearly need to be taught proper thumb technique for those controllers. :-)

Apparently, there's a Japanese instrument/toy called the Otamatone.  ('Otama' meaning 'musical note.  'Tone' like the English word.)  It's shaped like an eighth-note, you finger the stem similar to a violin, and squeeze the round part (which has a face on it) and it 'sings' an 8-bit-sounding note.

My sister found this vid:

Considering many of us spend a lot of time at the computer, I figured this would be helpful.  It's a set of stretches for tendonitis and carpel tunnel syndrome.  (Well, hopefully to prevent them.)

Guys.  Someone combined Undertale and DDR.  With Undertale-style gameplay.  I AM SERIOUSLY GEEKING!  (AND YES, THERE ARE DOWNLOADABLE FILES!  [Also: yes, there is an easier version than what's shown.])

I picked a relatively spoiler-free video.  There are also videos of people playing these on actual DDR-type machines, but the players are prone to swearing. XD;

(Technically, Rube Goldberg machines.  And technically, that one isn't. XD;  Still great, though. (http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f362/DPTDTKF/Smileys/Deseret/happy.gif))

Here's a great one if you know Zelda: Majora's Mask.  Apparently even Nintendo approves!  It's hard to hear the voiceover, so I'd recommend turning on the captions.
