Dev Logs / Last Word
« on: June 12, 2014, 09:16:36 PM »

If the pen is mightier than the sword, the mouth is mightier yet!

One-Sentence Story: In a society where getting the last word means having power over others, a small party is disrupted by a polite gentleman issuing orders via one-way intercom.

Genre: JRPG-like/Interactive Novella

Description: Photographer Whitty Gawship attends a prestigious get-together at the residence of the impressive Professor Chet Chatters. Members of the party are veteran conversationalists, each trying to gain subtle power over one-another. The mood shifts when Whitty and the others discover that the professor can get the last word in every conversation via his miraculous invention. Dastardly!

But what are the professor's motives? And why invite a commoner?

Last Word is an unconventional JRPG. Battle sophisticated guests using words as weapons. Collect topics by gossiping to unlock mysteries. Drink wine. The night is young and no one can leave until the devious Professor Chatters says so! Can Whitty and Seymour overcome the power of the professor's amazing machine? Or will they succumb to the saucy banter of the motley aristocrats around them? Don't hesitate in getting the Last Word.

EDIT: Updated. Older content in spoilers.

Spoiler for Hiden:

I'm going to upload images as I work on the game. I can't really take the time writing too much about it just yet since I'm on a deadline. But thanks for looking into it!

General Discussion / Do Soul Mates Exist?
« on: February 21, 2014, 09:31:22 AM »
How do you feel about the concept of a Soul Mate? Is there one person on the planet that is perfect for you?

Is there such a thing as "The One," or a True Love? How do you know when you've found them? Or is it all just a game of finding someone who is the best fit?

General Discussion / Favorite Board Games
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:23:25 AM »
What is your favorite board game!?

Also, throw down some that look good or are worth trying even if they are not necessarily your favorite. Generally, go wild with it!

This includes any tabletop game, be they role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or card games like Magic: The Gathering.

This is a topic I love to look at, but have very little real-life experience with. In my close group of friends very few of them enjoy the idea of board games, so I get my jollies from reviews and conversations of the hypothetical type. However, I will say that Carcassonne is one of my favorites if for no other reason than because I can recruit friends to play it with me much more easily than other games. I can talk Carc all day, really. But let's hear what you guys enjoy!

(Also, my memory is foggy; If I've already made this topic in some form, go ahead and erase it, then slap my wrist with a ruler. :P)

Dev Logs / Bullet Bros.
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:51:42 PM »
Here's a cool-looking Contra-style indie game coming up called Bullet Bros! There's not much I can add to it that the Kickstarter doesn't already cover, but I'll throw down the things I think are most important.

FERDK IS DOING THE SOUNDTRACK!

Now, this may sound silly, but despite his tremendous character flaws, he's an excellent musician. Here's proof:

Boss Theme

Snow Stage

I'm personally looking forward to the cool OST, but the game looks like it could be pretty fun in that old-school way.

And look, screenshots!

What is Bullet Bros?

Bullet Bros is a throwback to classic games like Contra, Super Mario 3, Bionic Commando and Blaster Master. It started out as an exercise to combine some of my favorite game mechanics together to see if they could co-exist. From there I switched everything over to a physics-based environment, and some really fun and unexpected things started to take shape. Bullet Bros was born.

Initial Scope

At the very minimum, Bullet Bros will be equivalent in size to the old Contra games; 10 levels, each with a unique, bad ass boss, and local co-op. I say minimum because I would love to take the scope much bigger if possible, and that’s where I really need the help of the Kickstarter community. The following categories break down what I would love to include in Bullet Bros with your support.

General Discussion / Info Request: Fear of Public Speaking
« on: August 21, 2013, 09:26:34 PM »
So I'm doing a little personal research for Social Caterpillar, and one of the questions that keeps arising is "how scary is public speaking to introverts/extroverts?"

I personally find it frightening, and I've heard statistics that say public speaking is more feared worldwide than death. But I've also heard opinions from people of my same type, as well as having read articles, expressing that public speaking is less frightening than, say, just talking within a group of people.

If you would do me a favor and express your opinion on public speaking, as well as expressing whether you are or think you are an introvert/extrovert, the info would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks! :)

Business / Pixel Sprite Art Commission [RESOLVED]
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:03:33 AM »
I shall be the first to post here! XD

Hey, guys. I'm looking to pay a person for art assets. That's right, pay.

I need some custom pixel character sprites for my newest project (Social Caterpillar) and, unfortunately, it looks like the fine fellow I intended to hire can't quite do it yet.

I've looked around the internet for quite a while trying to find people with the will and skill, but haven't found much. If you're interested in getting a quick job, or know someone who is, I'm hiring. :)

What I need are sprites that work well with this type of setting:

The sprites already shown are placeholders, and I have no intention of using them.

I only need about 15 different characters to be made, and less than half of them even need walk cycles. As far as sprite assets go, that's not too bad.

My price is flexible, but I can guarantee a minimum of $112.00 for the work.

Thanks for dropping by. :)

Complete Indie/Homemade Games / Social Caterpillar
« on: June 14, 2013, 12:33:45 PM »

THE PREMISE

This game is a diorama that elaborates on my thoughts and feelings about introversion and socializing. Each piece is some wildly personal metaphor for interacting and progressing. It mirrors my beliefs and my successes and my failures.

Social Caterpillar is the story of an introvert stepping outside his/her bubble for the sake of curiosity and the possibility of love... and maybe just to ace that big speech on insects. (Life's weird like that.) It incorporates context-sensitive puzzles as a way for the inexperienced character to work through social interactions while simultaneously ignoring a rather unhelpful Inner Voice.

This is a short, simple game that expresses the nuances of social interactions through bite-sized puzzles. There is very little text and most of the story is implied rather than explained. It's designed to evoke some neat thoughts while also looking kind of pretty and feeling kind of new. Also, caterpillars.

THE GAMEPLAY

The gameplay consists mostly of multiple choice puzzles. Each puzzle is an oversimplified metaphor for a particular type of social interaction. Fitting in with friends might require choosing which single picture combines with the others to form a whole rectangle. Talking to parents may require the player to pick a jigsaw figure that best bridges the gap between two family members. Even walking to the store can be complicated by a friendly wave or eye contact from a stranger.

As puzzles are completed, the player gains Social Points which help build social stamina. Traveling to new areas reduces energy temporarily, but opens up a different array of social puzzles and life experiences.

And when the player is completely exhausted, he/she heads home to recharge by playing videos games and relaxing on the couch. Peace and quiet can be rejuvenating.

Solving a puzzle (top left), recharging energy by playing video games (top right),
socializing in a crowd (bottom left), and navigating a romantic encounter (bottom right).

Spoiler for Long picture.:

The first five areas. A set of dioramas in order.

THE CATERPILLAR

There aren't actually any caterpillars in this game. I mean, not in the most obvious sense. But wouldn't it be cute if there were? Feel free to play with any caterpillar friends you might have.

THE OTHER FEATURES

Social Caterpillar is fairly straightforward and quick to move through. However, it does have several notable features:

        - Custom pixel art and music
        - Over 15 unique puzzles
        - Four characters to play as
        - Multiple secret areas and hidden puzzles
        - Minimal text
        - Pretentious metaphors (indie grade!)
        - I lied; there's at least one caterpillar
        - Multiple endings (probably three)

If I get to where I like in the development, I may add an "Extrovert Mode." This will be an unlockable side-game with loose extroversion-based mechanics. But don't hold your breath. I mean, if you want to play a game about extroverts, go play Animal Crossing. Those adorable critters are ALL up in each other's business.

General Discussion / Single Book Suggestion
« on: February 26, 2013, 10:40:35 PM »
I have this thing where I've been asking people I've met--even without knowing their names--what one single book they would suggest for me to read knowing that I will read it.

This has been great, because when you think about it, you tend to gravitate toward specifics genres or ideas, and maybe miss out on new things. With this, I've read books I would have never picked willingly off of the shelf and loved them. It's been eye opening. Some of my favorite reads are from genres I would never associate with the word "favorite."

So this is an extension of that--for myself, but also for other people who like to read.

If you would be so kind, could you please recommend one single book? I'll add whatever you say to my List of Books to Read (unless I've already read it). And only one! Some of the charm is seeing what choices people will express without knowing what I like to read.

I definitely encourage others to read the suggested books as well.

Thanks, guys! :)

Here's my Goodreads, for anyone who wants to add me. :)

Fleuret Blanc - Trailer on Vimeo

For more information, visit www.fleuretblanc.com.

BACKGROUND

23-year-old Florentine Blanc is a college graduate who's dedicated her life to travel. Without having a career to fall back on, she takes up menial jobs whenever her pockets become empty. After a few months of saving, she quits and charges off on her next big adventure.

After a brief hike in lower Asia, Florentine found herself back in France where she immediately stalked the internet for jobs. On a whim she applied to FOIL, a private fencing organization looking for members interested in a "new breed" of the sport. They promise performance-based wages with free room and board. Although she hadn't donned her whites since her late teens, she crossed her fingers and had her parents ship over her white rapier.

The rules? Members of FOIL must bring their most prized possession in the world. This object acts as a trophy, winnable by other members of the group. After seven days of bouts, the judges decide who she replaces as the new member. But what happens to members who leave? And why are their possessions such an integral aspect of FOIL's structure? As her experience in the isolated Château de l'Hiver becomes more menacing, Florentine determines to investigate what evolves into an mysterious and ugly truth.

PREMISE AND THEME

Fleuret Blanc is a simple and short game primarily about the importance of objects in our life. Though the storyline follows Florentine as she unravels the mysteries of FOIL and its judges, she's constantly challenged with ideas of possession, collection, and obsession. The game rewards Florentine--who starts as a minimalist traveler--with points based not only on how much she interacts with her fellow members, but also on how much money she makes and how many items she's hoarded in her room. Though collecting is encouraged for a better score, the overall implications of the act can be bittersweet.

SYSTEMS
Spoiler for Hiden:
TIME
Time flows across seven days. Each day is broken up into morning, afternoon, and evening. Within those three sections, the player may explore, bout, gossip, and go through their notes however they like. However, Events take up Free Time. There are only three "segments" of Free Time within each section of the day, so use them wisely. Once three events have been seen, all other events will disappear until the player forces time to progress.

BOUTS
Fencing against other members is mandatory in the evenings (Trophy Bouts), but optional during the rest of the day. Unlike typical "battles", the winner is based on how stylishly they performed, even if their health went down first. Winners either take control of their opponent's Prized Possession, or regain their own.

Florentine gets paid based on her performance as well: the style points she accrues during bouts correlate directly to her income. This means that the player makes money not by winning, but by doing their job as a fencer.

There is no experience or leveling, and each member follows the same exact rules of combat as the player. A move's success is based both on predicting the opponent's attacks (based on current bout conditions) and successfully completing timing or button-pressing indicators that appear on the screen. Each opponent has their own set of special techniques that separates them from the others. With enough money, the player may persuade someone to teach them these techniques.

BEDROOM

Florentine's "home base" is her bedroom where she stores the trophies of other members. She also may find or purchase other nic-nacs to hoard, transforming her simple sleeping quarters into a carnival of colors. Changing techniques and saving in the journal are just a few of things that can be done here.

CONCLUSIONS

Witnessing events (mandatory or not) may bring up "interesting" ideas that Florentine will take note of in her electronic journal. These Points of Interest all pile toward conclusions that she has yet to make. Filling in the prerequisite for conclusions can lead to bonus events that open up the story and have an effect on the ending.

GOSSIP

Collecting the best information may require gossiping. A select few members are as moral-less as Florentine and will engage in gossip about the last person, place, or thing that the player has come in contact with. (For example, if you click on a plant and then gossip with Roland, he'll give you his two cents about the local shrubbery).

Introductions & Farewells / Standard Hello
« on: June 08, 2011, 09:35:16 AM »
Hello! I'm Merlandese. I'm a stowaway from the Freebird colony, and I can see quite a few others are here, too.

I'm another Shigifan, and have followed her work for quite some time now. I'm looking forward to Melolune, especially because its soundtrack rocks.

I dig biking, reading, writing, music, art, coffee, innovation--all that normal stuff.
