Yay, I made it to Mars!

Great job TP, that was a lot of fun!  I was a little surprised the first time I crashed into a cloud, who knew they were such a hazard in space travel?  :)

I'm glad you liked it :D
I was gonna add more (realistic) obstacles but time was a little bit of an issue  ;)

A small usability feature might be to turn off the credits after you "win" maybe? Or let you go back to older builds maybe.

It was definitely fun, but I'm trying to think of changes you could make to improve it. It would be nice to be able to better dodge the clouds - maybe one of the upgrades could let you zoom out the field of view so you can react easier to incoming clouds? Currently I don't have the ability to dodge them at all, they come so fast.

All I can do is try to correct my plumb-ness, not dodge clouds.

You did a great job, TP. I look forward to whatever updates you make to this, or your next project if you want to move on to something else.

Yeah there are a lot of possibilities to improve the gameplay, I'm not sure if I'm gonna continue working on it or if I go on to my next project (whatever it might be).
Disabling the credits after winning should be a small fix so I might implement that later today.

Sorry for multi-posting, but my daughter insisted that I get the game downloaded on her computer so she could play it again.

I'd call that a success.

Thats amazing, so glad she liked it :D
I like making darker themed games aswell, but the child-friendly/bright/happy ones tend to turn out much better  ;)

Screenshot 1
Screenshot 2

 - All Sprites & Backgrounds (I think)
 - 95% of Coding
 - Menus
 - 3 full Tiers
 - An ending with a twist

 - 2/3 of the "cutscenes"
 - Obstacles in the sky to dodge
 - Balancing
 - Proper in-flight HUD
 - Music/Sounds (This is a big one I probably won't have time :(  :'( )

What I learned:
 - I really enjoyed this project
 - I am bad at devlogs
 - I should make a proper plan with done-by dates next time.
 - I won't sleep tonight  :P

The bad news: I didn't get around to working on the game since last sunday.  :/

The good news: I think I should be able to get done with everything on time.

I will post an update with some nice screenshots soon™

Entry 2:

So I started working on the Menu today...
Progress so far:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Still a lot of work to do on that.
Missing a lot of buttons and the overall layout is not quite there yet.

I made some progress on the flying part of the game aswell:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Let's just say it might need some balancing ;)

I'm not gonna show you any images of the next tier yet but it might include a trashcan and fireworks  :P

Interesting choice with Lua!  Is there a reason you choose to program with that?  I've never used Lua so I'm pretty ignorant of it.
Its a great language for quick prototyping/gamejams.
Also its very easy to learn ;) (I thought about doing a little basic programming tutorial in lua once the gamejam is over)
For larger projects I tend to use C# or C++.

Oooh, a totally fun option: since each "new beginning" is so separated from the others you could have entire optional secret sections - like there could be an unlockable Mental Institution section where you are using surreal rocket pieces that you pay for with meds you didn't take. Or an unlockable Alien Interference section where a crashed E.T. helps you with parts from their own ship.

O.O That sounds amazing  B)
I'm a little worried that branching paths might be quite a time investment though...
I'd love to include them but I'll have to see how fast I progress with the game in general  :)

Super Mars Story (SMS)

SMS is a game about getting to Mars.
You start out as a child in primary school, building your very first rocket out of cardboard and bottles.
As you progress through the game you also progress through your life unlocking new parts and getting closer to your goal.
Once you've reached a certain height you will automatically progress to the next tier.

A/D = Left/Right in-flight
Space = Secondary thrusters (If you have them)
Mouse = Everything else

 - 3 Tiers (cardboard, trash can, actual rocket)
 - Lot's of Pixel-Art
 - Handdrawn "cutscenes" made by TPs girlfriend
 - Clouds

Things I would have liked to include:
 - More obstacles mid-flight
 - Music / Sounds
 - Saving / Loading
 - more tiers
 - more storytelling

General Info:

Engine: löve2d
Language: Lua
Drawing Skill: Non existant

Entry 1:

So this year I had a hard time getting Ideas at first, but I think I have a pretty good concept of what my game is gonna be now.

An "upgrade" and flying game based on the idea that your dream throughout your entire life is to go to mars and start your very own colony.

I've tried to incorporate the theme of new beginnings not only with the "going to mars" theme but also by splitting the game into "tiers".
You start out in primary school with a rocket made out of cardboard.
You can upgrade the parts of your rocket (wings, base and thruster + maybe an activateable extra part?) after every launch (provided you earned enough money through sponsors)
Once you reach a certain height you advance to middle school and get better parts for your rocket (probably fireworks  :P).
These new parts start out with 0 upgrades so after each tier you start pretty much from scratch  ;)
Next tier would be university then maybe intern at nasa? (The progression is not quite planned through yet...)

Anyway heres a first design for the very first (primary school) rocket:
Tier 1 without upgrades:

Tier 1 with upgrades:

And no I have no Idea how I'm gonna fit clothing in here... but I will!

Least active forum member possible reporting for duty...  :(
Has it been over a year already?  o_o

I would love to make a game again. The theme suggestions look interesting (some pretty challenging aswell  ;) )
Haven't really programmed anything fun/not work-related this year so I might have gotten a little rusty but I'll give it a try.

Would also love to help out less experienced people in all things scripting/coding/programming.
 Maybe we could open help threads during the Jam (one for programming/scripting, one for graphics/animation and one for sound/music?)

Just an onsite irc implementation with a backlog would be perfect imo.
So you can see what has been going on even when you`re not around.

A normal shoutbox would be fine too though ;)

I can relate to your problem :D I don't have much time atm and because of that not much to share in terms of news&time (at least nothing thread worthy yet)...

You need to include all the dlls from your löve installation together with the .exe in a folder or it wont run for people who do not have löve installed ;)

Warning: This game is highly addictive I love it :D

I may have overlooked it but how would you like us to release the Games?  ???

If you dont have a solution already I´d suggest everyone hands them in via PM with some screenshots and a (short) description so you can make a big release Post at 11:59pm  :P

I have bad news, not that bad news and pretty good news...

I am not going to finish the game in time. In fact I´m not gonna finish it in its current form at all.
Some of you might have noticed my complete absence in the last week.
Real life hit me a little unexpected but in one of the best ways possible. I got offered a great Job which is amazing but required a lot of time, communication and paperwork...
(Also the game might have been a little too ambitious from the start  :P)

Now for the good news:
I am still planning on finishing a game till friday (a much smaller realisticly possible one ;))
I will rewrite my game in Java  (Maybe in C#) and bring it at least to the point I wanted it to be (This might take some months though)
I will stay with the community post my progress and not leave again, even though I might have a little less time than I have now...

So this is what has been going on for me the past 2 weeks I hope you understand and will at least enjoy my new little game  :D

Edit: First screenshot:
Spoiler for Hiden:
