August 12th, 2011 Updates and Highlights
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:24:33 PM »
Hi everyone!  Welcome to another Updates and Highlights!

1.) General Forum Updates
A big thank-you goes out to Reives and Arwym for installing some new security features, fixing bugs, and improving the general layout of the forum!  Per request, we're in the process of figuring out a good chat system as well, so stay tuned!  Additionally, Reives is still taking sign-ups for the Leeble Settlement Project, so sign up while spaces are open (the Ranger positions have already been filled).

2.) Art Contest
As previously announced, we're going to be holding an art contest here!  It will officially start once I hit 10,000 subscribers on youtube (which will hopefully be pretty soon).  But for anyone who would like to start thinking about it now, this is the topic: Insert Aero (the most well-known Leeble from Melolune) into a game of your choice.  How you choose to do this is entirely up to you... You could have Aero sitting on a Companion Cube, eating a 1-UP mushroom, fighting alongside a Hydralisk, whatever you like!  Any medium is welcome (pixel art, watercolor, sketches, etc.)  Just make sure to keep it clean and family-friendly (nothing pornographic, profane, overly violent, etc.).

The winners will receive a signed copy of the Plants vs. Zombies Game of the Year Edition (that comes with a little zombie figurine), and an assortment of fun PvZ swag which will be announced later.  We'll have one random winner, and one winner that is chosen by us... I'm really looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!  There are so many talented artists here that I'm sure it will be great :)

3.) The Great Mod Search!
Since there's a good chance the forum might experience some growth after the announcement of the art contest, the staff has decided that it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for a couple new mods.  We're looking for members of the community who are friendly and welcoming, would be interested in planning occasional activities (games, contests, etc.), and would help us keep the spammers under control.

4.) Get Better Soon TRUEfoe!
Our very own TRUEfoe suffered a cardiac death during Air Force Physical Fitness Testing... Thankfully he was running with other medics who were able to get him to help while there was still time.  He spent 4 days in a coma, and has received a pacemaker-like device, but he's making a recovery.  Let's all wish him well in his thread or on his profile page.  Get better soon TRUEfoe!

5.) To the Moon!
This week, Reives released a trailer for his first commercial game, To the MoonTo the Moon is a reverse chronological adventure about two scientists traversing the memories of an old man in order to fulfill his most important wish.  If you haven't yet seen it, the trailer is quite lovely (and if you're anything like me, you might get teary eyed from watching it).  Feel free to leave him comments or feedback on his thread here.

That's it for this Update... take care everyone, and have a great weekend ^_^

@Astragoth: Awesome, I can't wait to see your entry Dean!

@Strawberry: You should totally enter!  Any medium is accepted, it doesn't have to be colored.  In fact, it would be great to see people submit pixel art or sketches (and from what I've seen, you're pretty awesome at both).  Plus, we're going to have one totally random winner (like a lottery)^^

@Squall: I just picked it up again after a few weeks of time off... After EA bought PopCap we had to go through a lot of random meetings and were in and out of town, so it was tough for me to focus.  But now I'm getting back on track again... I've gotten a bunch of new art implemented, and I'm working on the last two areas and a major cutscene involving the character Liele.  I'll try to keep you all updated as soon as I have something interesting that I can post :)

Wow, sweet!
As for the chat, have you settled on a choice yet?
As for the mods, are there any details about signing up as one?

I'm curious about this too :)

And talking about updates, I'm still really curious about "Cube Land" - how's that going? Is it all working out well with the music and words? :) I'm REALLY excited to hear the final song when it comes out ^_^ Hmmm, talking about Cube Land, I'm gonna fire up the instrumental sample again... I'm so hooked on this song! XD

Thanks for the info, Laura. :) Don't stress yourself, I was just curious since there weren't any Melolune-related announcements for a while. Also I heard in a lecture about different cultures that if even a Japanese person writes "it was tough" then it was truly impossible to get anywhere near focusing on the game. I hope your job is more relaxed now. :)

I'll keep you all updated on the mod situation; I think we have a couple folks in mind for this first round... and as the forum grows, we'll probably try to add a couple more as well :)  Thank-you for your interest.

Also, I think I'll be able to make the art contest video within the month (I checked my subs and it's already at 9,250!  Just a bit more to go.  I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with, there are so many great artists here^^

Also, brushing teeth while typing is hard.  I don't think I will do this again, haha.

It's even harder to eat while brushing your... I mean typing on the keyboard. ^^ Afterwards you will realize that it would've been faster to do one thing after the other because typing with 10 fingers is way more than twice as fast. Preferably you should do the typing before the brushing because if the typing (and all other internet stuff that may arise) takes long enough to make you hungry again you can still eat and don't need to re-brush. That's my experience. ;-)

Question: Would collaborating on a picture be allowed for the art contest?  ... With someone in the same household.  We could easily share the prize.

Sure, as long as you're cool with sharing the prize than you could collaborate with someone :)

Do you already know what Melolune will cost? I've never seen an announcement about a price so far, so I'm kinda surprised that there is one. Of course it's perfectly fine that you want to be compensated for your hard work, so just tell us what you have in mind. Though I think you will reach more people if you make the money differently, e.g. by in-game premium features (you can access a certain area only if you enter your licence key as a password) and/or by merchandising (OST, shirts, plushies, booklets, tableware etc.), e.g. a coffee cup with a Melolune image would be awesome. :)

Actually I don't know which business model (freeware vs. payware) works better. I just assume from my experience at sites like Armor Games that the gaming market has by far the worst competition ever when it comes to non-high-end games. Or look at the Yugioh abridged series. The artist has the most subscribers in all of Japan (yes, he is able to outrank even Magibon XD) and even though he'd totally deserve payment for every episode he doesn't get any for it, but he does have a store on his website (http://www.yugiohabridged.com/) where he sells various articles with pics and quotes from his series.

Just my 2 cents. ^^
